REPEATS: A Thing of the Past?
Cordero (left) XXIV Winner

San Diego, CA.

Time, as we know, has a way of changing things. Once upon a time, Got Game Tournaments boasted a handful of heavyweights with so much game that you could almost pencil them into the deep rounds of any given event. Now however, with the continuous influx of other talent to these events, it would appear that the days of the dynasties could now be at an end. And Tournament XXIV seemed to provide further evidence of this observation as the same team dismissed the defending title-holder from XXIII, that he used to obtain the crown last July. In the field of the eight players that remained at that point, only one other former champ still had life. And he too fell two rounds short of the championship.
Of the two players who did make it to the title game, only one, LaVell Anderson, had previously played in numerous events. Anderson, a San Diego resident, held the number six slot on the all-time, Got Game Power Chart prior to Tourney XXIV, took the Carolina Panthers to their second consecutive championship. But it was there that he’d meet

the seventh player in GG Tournament history to take first place on their first attempt.

Cordero Cisneros (left), an active-duty service member in the United States Navy, ambled in on crutches the day of, having just sustained an injury the day before. Despite his injury, he proved to be anything but ‘Doubtful’ or ‘Questionable’ as he went five straight. While three of those W’s were by close, three-point shaves, he left no room for argument with the other two.

His first match-up was versus long-time event contender, Zane and his Dallas Cowboys. The only player to hold six titles took Cordero down to the wire, but lost 38-35, at home in Irving, Texas. Following this, the Rams clipped Tournament 10 winner, Jon and his Chargers, 30-27, in a second away game for the Cordero. In his third match-up on the day, the Rams were at home for the first time where they defeated Sharelle’s Lions 56-24. Thereafter, a trend had begun to prove apparent as the Rams third win on the road was again, by three points. They took this one away from James in the Black Hole of Oakland, 31-28. At that point, his Rams would again become the home team for the final match-up of the day against LaVell’s Carolina Panthers.

To this point, LaVell had experienced a fairly quiet day as far as what was reported. His first win in Round One, came at the expense of Shamous’ Chiefs, taking this one by 14 at Carolina. Following the 35-21 point game, no records were recorded in his match-up against Eric’s New York Giants, nor were they following him defeating Sammy’s Atlanta Falcons. This is unfortunate because not only were both games most likely very good ones, but also this affects the overall ranking of all four players – perhaps adversely.

Following Round Three, LaVell was slated to meet his brother J.R. Running with Chicago for the first time, J.R. was having a good day till that point, but elected to opt out of competition vs LaVell, citing, “… he [LaVell] knows my game too well.” Thanks to his brother stepping aside, LaVell’s next stop was his first trip to a Got Game Tournament championship.

The first half of the XXIV Championship showed an equal amount of skill and strategy on both side of the ball. TE Jeff King (31yd, 23yd TDs) accounted for both scores for LaVell; while Cordero put up his first half numbers via Jackson (1yd run) and Corey Chavous’ 80-yd fumble return. And nearing the end of the half, the Rams were poised to go up by three, but K Jeff Wilkins, who had been so instrumental in the Rams wins that day, missed one from the 18-yard line. So the story truly began to unfold in the second half.

  Pick

Jeff King accounted for the Panthers only end zone appearances. King may have been the MVP if Carolina had put up more points.

Corey Chavous, who had already taken a fumble to the House, steals one from Steve Smith who was garnished by double-coverage.

  Steven Jackson TD Run

Bruce get his here, beating his man and without help over the top on Bulger's third TD pass on the day.

Steven Jackson's 22-yard run seals the deal for St. Louis – delivering Cordero and the Rams their first victory at a Got Game Tournament.

While Carolina did get an early 33-yd field goal from Kasay, the Rams kept the Panthers out of the end zone… while putting up an additional 28 points themselves. And the points seemed to come from all directions. A 12-yd Bulger to Drew Bennett score in the 3rd Quarter, followed by a 78-yd strike to Holt against Cover-2 and a 29-yarder to a leaping Isaac Bruce against Man Coverage. All contributed to provide the St. Louis Rams, once prohibited from use for Got Game Events, their first banner in the Parade of Champions… keeping alive the belief that a new face may possibly be next to go up after Tournament XXV. And if you will be a part of that event in July of 2008, why shouldn’t that face be yours.

SAN DIEGO -- The city's major Madden championship went to Cordero Cisneros.

Cisneros won Got Game XXIV, beating Lavell Anderson in the finals, 42-17. He became the fourth different Got Game champion in as many events.

Cisneros, sporting New England Patriots attire but opting to use the St. Louis Rams, never trailed in the second half in winning what is arguably the second oldest tournament series in the state.

Anderson, after giving up a touchdown to fall behind 21-14 in the third quarter, went on a lengthy drive with his Carolina Panthers that included two fourth-down conversions. When he reached the St. Louis 13-yard line on fourth down, he opted to kick a 30-yard field goal, which brought relief to Cisneros, who still had the lead, 21-17.

Cisneros then took a couple plays to add to the lead. He started the fourth quarter with a long pass down the right sideline to go ahead, 28-17.

Cisneros had a prime opportunity to go into halftime with the lead. He threw up a hail mary with 4 seconds to play. It fell incomplete in the end zone, but referees called defensive pass interference, putting the ball on the 1-yard line and forcing an untimed down.

Cisneros tried a 18-yard field goal, and it sailed wide right, leaving both players tied 14-14 at half.

QUICKDRAW A SUCCESS!

At last, the wait is over! QUICKDRAW stands to eliminate the waiting period for all players to qualify for Seeding in Got Game Tournaments. While the Seeding Method is a great way to determine who to pit against who in our events, it does take two-hours out of the day, when as one player put it, "Let's just DO this thing!"

Thanks go out to Zane Alshiekh for this brilliant idea, my me, Ron, and all of us!
